Mussel Flex

Mussel Flex is a project designed to live multiple lives. It’s initial form directly matches the interior volume of a particular exhibition space in New York, but it’s meshy skin is extremely malleable and can be stretched and pulled to provide inhabitable spaces. When the exhibition closes, Mussel Flex can be taken down and donated to a mussel farmer (as it is composed entirely out of mussel sock), then stuffed with adolescent mussels and dropped to the bottom of the ocean. The project maintains the residual form of the exhibition space and acts as an ghostly undersea monument, providing a habitat for marine life, and filtering out industrial pollution and agricultural waste from ocean water.
